THIS WEEK'S SHOW

WORKING WITH ELDERS TO REDUCE FALLS AND INCREASE MEMORY

This Week's Expert:
Karen Peterson

Karen Peterson

Join me and my guest, Karen Peterson, as we talk about a program that she has developed that prevents falls in the elderly and helps to restore memory (www.MoveWithBalance.org).

Karen Peterson has an MA. She has 40 years of teaching experience in adult educational programs and senior centers. Karen has been working with senior citizens for 18 years. In 2000, she began a nonprofit called Giving Back and one of the programs, Move With Balance, focuses on using active elders to mentor frail elders by practicing integrative movements. She has achieved some very dramatic results that we’ll be talking about.

Is Sitting Too Much Reducing Your Life Span?

You’ve probably read reports in the media that sitting too long will reduce your life span by several years. The recommendation is to stand a lot longer during the day. One thing that is currently being sold to address this problem,  is a desk that will go up when you stand and down when you sit.

It turns out that changing your desk to stand more is not the real solution. Dr. Joan Vernikos, former director of NASA’s Life Science Division and author of Sitting Kills, Moving Heals, clarified the situation. Her research shows that it’s not sitting for long periods or standing for long periods that is crucial to your health as both can be detrimental to your health (just ask someone who stands on their feet at work all day long). Rather, she found that the most important factor is how many times you stand up during the course of the day. It’s the change of posture that make the difference.

To understand this you need to know that there is an enzyme in our bodies called Lipoprotein lipase that attaches to fat in your bloodstream and transports the fat into your muscles to be used as fuel. This enzyme is reduced dramatically when you are sitting  , however, it increases with activity and becomes most effective in getting the fat into the cells by simply going from sitting to standing. such as  Vernikos recommends standing up 35 times over the course of the day. By doing that, you don’t have to worry about shortening your life! So…it is the act of standing up that is way more important than working at a standing desk.

Using Enzymes To Fight Viruses

Viruses are unique. A virus is one of the smallest particles that the body can react to and it’s technically not a living thing. It has no life span and can go dormant for decades yet when it comes in contact with a human, it wakes up. It also mutates so fast that you can’t make a vaccine that will work against it. That’s why the yearly flu vaccine isn’t usually effective since it was actually formulated for last years virus. Also, antibiotics don’t work on viruses. So how can you fight these viruses? Researchers at the US Office of Naval Research are pursuing protein eating (which are called proteolytic) enzymes. These enzymes attack the viruses exterior protein coating and digest it, which causes the virus to become inert and harmless. While the body makes its own enzymes, you can get products that increase the enzymes in your body.

In Europe and Asia, enzymes that work on the whole body which have no side effects, called systemic enzymes, are best selling products ! Here’s a brief list of some of the benefits of enzymes in the body.

  1. These enzymes deliver nutrients to cells and tissues for nourishment and regeneration,.
  2. Speed up chemical reactions within cells for energy production and detoxification.
  3. Provide energy to rebuild muscles, cells, tissues.
  4. Balance hormones
  5. Reduce inflammation,
  6. Activate healing and relieve pain.
  7. Dissolve scar tissue, tumors and cysts.
  8. Regulate metabolism to maintain optimum weight.

With this research, hopefully we will be seeing enzyme products in the US market, since enzymes are a powerful product.

Diet & Alzheimer's Disease

A study published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease by the Mayo Clinic found that diets rich in carbohydrates were associated with a 89% increased risk for dementia while a high-fat diet resulted in a 44% reduced risk. The high carb diet results in the elevation of blood sugar levels which is directly related to shrinkage of your memory center and memory abilities.

To determine if you are eating too many carbs and not enough fat, ask you Doc to check your fasting blood sugar level.. According to Dr. David Perlmutter, author of Grain Brain, the ideal level should be around 70 to 85 mg/dl with 95 being the maximum safe level. So…cut the carbs and increase the good fats which includes coconut oil, olive oil and the oil in nuts.

Marijuana Causes Drop In Prescription Painkiller Deaths

Researchers have reported that deaths from overdoses from pain killing prescription drugs have dropped sharply in states where medical marijuana is legal. After one year deaths dropped 20%, after two years it dropped 25%   and  by the fifth and sixth year of medical marijuana use pain levels dropped 33%. So…not only is medical marijuana safer than drugs, it’s great at getting rid of chronic pain, plus you don’t need to smoke a lot of it to get relief. As an example, one study showed that just three puffs of marijuana a day for five days helped those with chronic nerve pain to sleep better and have less pain. So…the notion of taking a hit of marijuana can really save your life from overdosing on prescription drugs.

Some Therapies To Slow Parkinson's Disease

There are several options available to slow the progression of Parkinson’s Disease while improving the patient’s functioning and enhancing overall health levels. One of these options is stem cell therapy. Scientists are coaxing stem cells into becoming dopamine-producing neurons and then they are safely delivering the neurons to the brain. Dr. Julian Whitaker at the Whitaker Wellness Institute has been using adult stem cells for several years on patients by taking a small amount of the patient’s own fat, concentrating it and infusing it back into the body where the stem cells home in on areas of degeneration.

Another therapy Whitaker uses is hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) and glutathione. According to Whitaker, HBOT floods the brain with oxygen and wakes up damaged cells while promoting the growth of new blood vessels to nourish the cells. Giving intravenous gluthathione stops oxidative stress and inflammation that kills dopamine producing cells. This slows the destructive process and improves symptoms in Parkinson’s patients.

Other natural approaches include taking a brisk 45-minute walk three times a week. Results of a study of 60 patients taking these walks over a six month period included improvements in motor function, fitness, mood, memory and cognition.  The results were so dramatic that the researchers suggested that walking should be considered a medical therapy.

Finally, Dr. Whitaker recommends taking a multivitamin with extra Vitamin D3.  A placebo controlled study reported that those who took Vitamin D had a much slower deterioration s compared to patients who had low levels of Vitamin D3. So…there are now a number of things you can do to slow the progression of Parkinson’s.

Finally, A Positive Use For Black Mold!

Black mold  an cause all kinds of health problems. Researchers recently reported on a positive benefit of using black mold. This study was published in the Journal of Ginseng Research and found that when Korean red ginseng is blended with an enzyme found in black mold, it has the power to stop sun damage by preventing skin thickening and reducing wrinkle formation, while restoring collagen levels in the body. While human trials still need to be done to confirm these results it’s nice to know that even black mold may have a positive side.

Don't Have Refrigeration? Use A Frog To Keep Milk Fresh!

I know this sounds strange to use a frog to keep milk fresh. Well, that’s what people in Russia and Finland did before refrigeration became available. They placed a living Russian brown frog in the milk to keep it fresh. It turns out this is not as gross as it sounds as the frog’s skin is loaded with peptides that are antimicrobial compounds. These peptides are as potent against Salmonella and Staphylcoccus bacteria as prescription antibiotics. So…this is another example of ancient wisdoms having a basis in science.

Make A Fist And Remember

Researchers had 50 right-handed students memorize a list of words. Those who clenched a ball in their right hand before memorization and in their left had before recalling the words boosted their memory by 15% compared to a control group. Like the Brain Gym® movements that I teach, clenching the fists can change the way your brain functions.

Clenching your right fist increases the brain activity in the left brain hemisphere where information is encoded, while clenching your left fist increases memory retrieval in the right hemisphere. The researchers have also found that right-hand clenching leads to increasing what they call approach emotions, such as happiness and anger while left-hand clenching leads to withdrawal emotions like sadness and anxiety. For left-handed folks, you’ll use the opposite hand  for memory, recall and emotions. So…start clenching those fists!
