Changing Schools By Using Meditation
Can meditating during school time change the behavior of the students? The answer seems to be YES! Four schools in San Francisco had meditation incorporated into the school day. Several of the schools were in the poorest neighborhoods in the city with gun violence occurring regularly in the area and fights happening 3 to 5 times a week in the schools. While the principals were skeptical, they agreed to fit 30 minutes of meditation into the school day (one school did it by extending the school day by ½ an hour).

The two worst schools reported better academic performance and a 75% decrease in suspensions. The students themselves reported that they were more conscious of their actions, calmer and less angry. They also increased their ability to focus. So…imagine if all schools incorporated meditation into the school day what a change that could make in the ability of kids to learn and feel safe at the same time!

Kids Use Music Instead Of Drugs To Stop Post-Operative Pain
Researchers at Northwestern University and Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago found that children recovering from surgery minimized their pain by listening to music and audio books, In addition, there are no side effects.

The study was published in Pediatric Surgery and evaluated 54 patients ages 9 to 14 who had various types of elective surgeries. There were three groups of 18. The first group spent 30 minutes listening to songs that they selected. The second group listened to an audio book of their choice and the third group was the control group and didn’t listen to anything. Both the music and the audio book groups reported feeling less pain after the 30 minutes. The researchers think that the music and audio books refocused the kids attention aware from the pain. I would think the same results should apply to adults based on the book Norman Cousins wrote where he watched videos of comedies and healed his illness. So…having pain? Listen to music or an audio book!

Sleeping Too Long Can Be Bad For Your Brain
You may have heard that more research is showing that the lack of sleep can lead to mood and behavior changes plus it can lead to your developing acute and chronic diseases. Researchers have now discovered that getting too much sleep can also have harmful effects. One study found that people in their 60s and 70s who slept nine or more hours each night had a more rapid decline in their cognitive function than those who slept between six and eight hours. The longer sleepers had nearly twice the cognitive decline.

Another study found that longer sleepers increased their risk of obesity, heart disease, heart attack and stroke.

So…pay attention to how long you sleep. If you are in the 60 to 70s age group, set the alarm so you are in the normal range.

The Importance Of Magnesium

Old prescription pills that are thrown down the toilet may wind up in our  water supply since water treatment plants are unable to filter out these chemicals.
