High Tech Ways That Can Help You Stay At Home As You Age
As people age, they would really prefer to stay at home for as long as possible. There are now a bunch of high tech gadgets that can help that become a reality for more elderly. Let’s explore a number of these devices.

  1. At home patient monitoring can be done for glucose, weight and oxygen in the blood. The device works with a smart phone and sends the readings to your doctor.

  2. Fall monitors are now available that don’t require the push of a button. The device can actually tell when you have fallen. It then contacts a call center or designated caregiver. If the person doesn’t respond to a follow-up phone call, emergency responders will be sent to the address.

  3. Activity monitors can tell if you’ve become more or less active or even when you’re spending more time visiting the bathroom. They can also track how often the refrigerator door is opened, when the stove is turned on and how often the bathroom is used.

  4. Walking monitors can measure walking speed which may indicate balance problems, muscle weakness or other issues that can interfere with daily living.

So…this is probably the beginning of our ability to monitor what’s going on so the elderly can safely stay at home longer and enjoy life more.

Soda Shortens Our Lifespan By 5 Years

A study conducted by the University of California San Francisco School of Medicine found that drinking soda can shorten a person’s lifespan by 5 years. The way the researchers went about this discovery was by measuring the length of telomeres which are located on the ends of our chromosomes. The shorter the telomeres the faster and greater that our cells age.

There were 5,000 people in the study and the researchers found that people who consumed 20 ounces of soda per day reduced their lifespan by 5 years. They found that drinking soda was as dangerous to our health as smoking cigarettes! So…if you have the soda habit, do your best to attempt to drink water or tea instead

The Importance Of Using Supplements To Increase Mitochondrial Activity

The mitochondrial in our cells play a crucial role in our being able to stay young longer. The mitochondria are in each of our cells and they are the cells’ power plant. It is where oxygen is burned and energy is produced. The DNA in mitochondria actually come only from our mothers and also have a role in cell signaling and the creation of new mitochondria.

According to Dr. Julian Whitaker there are three supplements that are very supportive of our mitochondria. Two of these are coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) ( 100-200 mg per day) and L-carnitine (2 – 4 gm per day. There are have hundreds of controlled clinical trials validating the positive effects in using these supplements to have a positive impact on cardiovascular disease, neurodegenerative disorders, fatigue and frailty. The third supplement, astaxanthin (4-8 mg per day), is found in salmon, krill, shrimp and lobster. This may be the most effective antioxidant ever discovered for protecting our mitochondria.

So…if you’re low energy pop a few supplements and see if your energy level rises.

A New Risk For Developing Cancer – Major Roadways

Living near a major roadway with a lot of traffic can generate noise and pollution. There’s now another item to add to this list and that’s the possibility of developing dementia. A study published in The Lancet found that living close to a major roadway may increase your risk of developing dementia. The closer you are to the highway, the higher the risk.

A New Use For Silly Putty

Remember playing with Silly Putty when you were a kid? You could mold it and stretch it as much as you liked. Well, there may be a new use for Silly Putty. It seems that silicone is what gives Silly Putty its ability to stretch. This ability to stretch and form a pliable surface could make it easier to transform cells into stem cells. This ability may help treat spinal cord injuries and even Alzheimer’s disease.
