Dr. Teplitz - the "Energy Doctor"!

Becoming Nicer As You Age
An Internet survey of over 132,000 adults aged 21 to 60 published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology found that more people described themselves as warm, generous and helpful after age 30. The conclusion - people become nicer as they age. So…if you have a curmudgeon in your life there's still hope.

Harvesting Timber Underwater
A company in Canada has developed a submersible that has a chain saw and can cut down trees that are underwater. This means it can harvest trees that are underwater in lakes that were created when valley floors were flooded behind hydroelectric dams. Because the trees are in cool water with a lack of oxygen, they have been preserved from decay. It's been estimated there are 200 billion board-feet of high quality timber down there. That's more than six times the amount harvested each year in the US. What a great way to save live trees!

Vitamin C Deficiency is Affecting More People Than Thought
Researchers from Arizona State University questioned over 30,000 people. Between 5 to 17% were deficient in Vitamin C while 13 to 23% were completely depleted. The two groups who were at the highest risk were Smokers and African American males. So…my recommendation is to do it the easy way and take 1,000 to 1,500 mgs of Vitamin C each day.

Having Difficulty Breathing, Take Vitamin C
A two-year study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that the lack of a sufficient amount of Vitamin C may increase the impact of common inflammatory lung diseases. Vitamin C keeps the surfaces of the lung's airways hydrated which seems to improve the ability of the body to clear the respiratory tract.

Speaking of C, It Can Protect Against Rheumatoid Arthritis
Research published in Annals of Rheumatoid Disease found a connection between a low intake of Vitamin C and the risk of developing inflammatory polyarthritis, which is a form of rheumatoid arthritis that involves two or more joints. Subjects who had the lowest amounts of C had three times the risk of subjects who consumed the highest amounts. So…did I say something about taking 1,000 to 1,500 mgs of Vitamin C each day?

Traffic Noise Has Negative Consequences
In most cities, traffic noise has been getting louder and louder. Research is now showing that noise levels that are well below levels that damage our hearing can cause increased blood pressure, fatigue, stress and near schools it interferes with learning. Children exposed to noise that was greater than 60 decibels learned far more slowly and have difficulty with speech recognition than children who experienced noise levels below 40 decibels. These children in the higher decibel schools learn to tune out the noise, but they also tune out speech.

A study of lower income people living in homes in the Los Angeles-Long Beach region found that 220,000 were so troubled by traffic noise that they wanted to move.

Since SUVs and other light trucks produce twice as much noise as cars, just by requiring quieter tires and exhaust systems would have a major impact on reducing noise levels. As a matter of fact, that is precisely what the Japanese government is requiring of it auto makers.

Your Doctor's Tie, It May Be Spreading Disease
Since medically caused illnesses have now become the leading cause of death in this country, doctors need to be paying attention to their ties. That's right, their ties! Researchers at New York Hospital Medical Center swabbed 42 ties of medical personnel and 10 ties worn by security guards who had no contact with patients. Almost half the ties of the medical staff carried several strains of bacteria that could cause infection while the tie of only one security guard was contaminated.

Maybe it's time for us to take charge and bring scissors with us when we need to go to the doctor or hospital and start clipping ties. Just kidding, but be aware, if the doctor's tie is coming too close to you, ask him to please move it.

I Got To Drive Through Ivan
On the Thursday when Hurricane Ivan hit Alabama, I was speaking in the morning in Huntsville which is around 350 miles from the coast. I was scheduled to speak the next morning in Myrtle Beach, SC. Since the Huntsville airport was closed and, because the storm had dropped to a Tropical Storm, I decided to rent a car and drive the 550 miles to Myrtle Beach. I had to drive south in order to catch the Interstate to Atlanta. I was actually 40 miles East of Birmingham when the storm was west of the City.

The strangest part was when I got to Atlanta around 5 pm, I ran into rush-hour traffic in the middle of a tropical storm. After 8 hours of driving, I got clear of the Storm and got a big smile on my face. Four hours later I arrived in Myrtle Beach.

For the most part I was able to drive feeling relaxed and stopped to meditate halfway through the trip as a way to re-energize myself. I made it to Myrtle Beach around 1 a.m. and did the Keynote address at 8:30 a.m. in the morning.

So…if I agree to do a program, you'll know I will go above and beyond to get there. Also, if you'd like to make a donation to the American Red Cross to help people handle all these disasters, you can 800 HELP NOW. They even have an automated donation line.

Food Coloring and Preservatives Causing Kids Hyperactivity
A study published in the journal Archives of Child Health found that children having foods and beverages with food coloring and preservatives were observed by their parents to be more hyperactive. The study tested 227 children aged 3 to 4. The researchers had the children on a controlled diet for four weeks. During week 1, the foods were free of additives. For week 2, half the kids had one daily serving of fruit juice that had additives while the other half received the same drink without the chemicals. During the 3rd and 4th weeks, the process was repeated.

Parents, whose kids had the additive laden drink, observed a clear increase in hyperactivity of between 6 to 15%. Since it took only ONE drink to make this difference, image the results if a child is having several drinks or foods each day that is full of additives. So…read those labels and keep your kids as additive free as you can especially if they are already hyperactive.

New Concept For Humanizing Hospitals
There is a hospital in Norway called Rikshospitalet that has doubled its number of patients, lowered its staff turnover and absentee rates and even reinvigorated its recruitment. How did they do it? It was simple. They built an inviting, soothing hospital with soft lighting, great views, single rooms, relaxing gardens, art on the walls, skylights, large works of art, windows that open. None of it is "rocket science", but much of it has been ignored in hospitals in the US. Just think of how much faster someone will heal being in a lovely environment. Something to think about…
