ANOTHER WAY TO STOP LEG CRAMPS AT NIGHT

A reader, Carol Shaheen, emailed me about another treatment for leg cramps besides the ones I listed. "One of the most effective things I've found is #8 Tissue Salts, Mag, Phos. The dose is 4 tablets, under the tongue, with a sip of hot water. During pregnancy this is an especially effective remedy. The result is almost instantaneous. After using the #8 tissue salt, the problem never recurred. I also use vitamin E, mixed tocopherols." Thanks, Carol. You can purchase this Tissue Salt at a health food store.

GOING TO THE HOSPITAL? PAY ATTENTION TO THIS!

It's the ratio of nurses to patients! As the ratio of patients-to-nurses rises above 4 to 1, so does the postoperative death rates. For every additional patient above four a nurse is expected to tend, there is a 7% increased risk of death. Patients are more likely to suffer from such complications as urinary tract infections, and pneumonia and more likely to die from such treatable conditions as gastrointestinal bleeding. This was reported in the AARP Newsletter.

There is actually a 126,000 person shortage of nurses. This means when the ratio is higher, you're going to be having nurses who are overextended and tired.

So what can you do? If you are doing elective surgery, check out the nursing staff ratio in advance. Have a family or friend at your side during the hospital stay. Have them act as an advocate for you. Write everything down including questions to ask your doctor and nurses. Double check if there's a change to any of your medications or IV fluids.

NORTHWEST AIRLINES NEW DETROIT TERMINAL

I just recently flew on Northwest Airlines and experienced their new terminal in Detroit, I was definitely not impressed with the commuter flight wing of the terminal.

My flight came into the last gate in the commuter terminal. My next flight was also a commuter flight. What I immediately noticed was that there was no sign at any gate with a flight number or destination. All that it had was the gate number. There were no personnel to ask where the next flights gate was. I had to walk all the way into the main terminal building to find the flight display monitors. I then discovered that my next flight was all the way back at the next to the last gate. While for me the walk was fine, for an elderly person it would be difficult to go up and back for nothing.

I headed back to the next gate and discovered that there are only 3 chairs for people to sit on. Northwest doesn't want you to sit down while you are waiting for the flight to be called. Once again, for an elderly person, this could cause discomfort. I know the airlines have been cutting back, but these are silly cutbacks that spell poor customer service.

So.if you have a choice, you might want to alternatives to flying Northwest commuter flights through Detroit.

ONE MINUTE TEST TO DISCOVER A STROKE

There's a one minute test to discover if someone is suffering a stroke. This was reported at the 28th International Stroke Conference. There are three steps:
1. Ask the person to raise both arms in front of the chest and hold them up.
2. To speak a simple sentence clearly.
3. To smile.
In a study, the volunteers were able to identify the stroke with a high level of accuracy.

Other signs to be aware of include dizziness, dim or blurred vision, numbness or tingling in the mouth or cheeks, weakness in the legs and arms, headache in the back of the head, and nausea and vomiting.

GO TO A DERMATOLOGIST TO IDENTIFY MELANOMAS

The Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology reported that 80% of family physicians have trouble recognizing early or subtle lesions. Dermatologists have a much better track record; yet only 40% of us go to a dermatologist for a skin complaint.

So.if you see something suspicious (and half of all melanomas are initially discovered by the patient), get yourself to a dermatologist. Melanomas discovered in the upper skin layer are almost 100% curable, so the sooner you go the better.

BOOMERS LIKE TO WORK

In a survey conducted by RoperASW, they found that 74% of baby boomers, aged 45 to 56 enjoy their jobs. Seventy-nine percent would keep working even if they won the lottery and the same percentage would be more depressed over being unable to find a job than being unable to find a satisfying relationship.

Basically, the boomer generation defines itself by what they do in life. So for boomers (Like me) who are reading this, keep right on trucking.

WORRYING COSTS YOU TIME

People who have generalized anxiety disorder (where a person keeps fretting and agonizing over things) lose 40 hours a week worrying. The rest of us lose 13 hours per week. This means the best thing we can do to create more time in our lives is to stop worrying.  While it is easier said than done, you can explore relaxation and coping skills, group and individual counseling, dietary adjustments (eliminate foods that make you hyper and foods that you are allergic to), and as a last recourse, medications.

IF YOU ARE HIGH TECH DON'T FORGET FACE-TO-FACE

A company called Cinnabar was heavily into all kinds of technology to stay in touch with clients. The systems worked great, at first. When the company's booming business began to drop off, the President discovered that face-to-face interaction with clients was an extremely important part of the communication process. He asked his people to pay personal visits to clients. The results were a 50% growth in business within a couple of quarters after the change.

So, emails and websites are great, but don't forget to build the person-to-person contact into your company's communication mix.

STOP BLADDER INFECTION

You may be aware of the benefits of drinking cranberry juice to stop bladder infection. Researchers thought its effectiveness was due to the acidic nature of cranberries. They've now found this is not the reason. Its beneficial effect is due to the fact that cranberries contain a powerful antioxidant called condensed tannins.

Now you can add blueberries to you list of cures for urinary track infection. Researchers have found the same beneficial impact can be had by eating blueberries or drinking blueberry juice.
