Hospitals Are Employing Patient Advocates

There are now doctors called hospitalist's that are being employed by hospitals to manage a patient's entire hospital experience from admissions to discharge. A six year study in Florida found no difference in the quality of care, but it did find that a hospitalist cut the patient's stay by 16 percent and the cost by 8 percent. So…if you have to go to the hospital, immediately ask if they have a hospitalist available so you can get home faster with less cost.

Too Many Choices Can Lead To Not Choosing

As a culture we have been moving to having more and more choices on everything. Having all these choices may be making it hard for us to choose anything. An article in AARP Bulletin clearly makes this point. With 85 types of crackers to choose from, 80 pain relievers, thousands of mutual funds to pick from, we are becoming overwhelmed with all the choices we face on even the simplest of purchases.

Some studies have shown that as a supermarket increases the variety of jams or chocolates on its shelves, the number of sales actually go down. As the number of mutual funds in a 401(k) retirement plan goes up, the likelihood employees will pick any of them goes down. Even patient satisfaction goes down when the choice of medical treatments for an ailment goes up. All these choices are enough to make a person depressed, and it does.

So…to reduce your stress, recognize that it's ok not to have to pick the perfect product or service. Rather ask yourself "is this product or service going to be good enough for what I need it for?" Then, make a decision..

Chromium Picolinate Improves Mood Swings & Depression

A recent double-blind study on 113 subjects, reported at the Conference of National Institutes of Mental Health, found that 600 mcg of chromium picolinate improved symptoms of mood swings, fatigue and weight-gain perception. It also significantly reduced carbohydrate craving. People with the highest levels of carbohydrate cravings had the greatest reduction in depression symptoms after taking chromium picolinate.

So…if any of these depression symptoms hit you, try using chromium picolinate to stop them as soon as you begin to notice the symptoms.

A New Arrow Against Alzheimer's Disease

A study published in the Journal of Biological Chemistry found that curcumin, a dietary staple in curry in the Indian diet, may be a potential weapon in the fight against Alzheimer. The researchers found that curcumin, when given to genetically altered mice, inhibited the accumulation of destructive beta amyloids. Earlier studies found that curcumin also has powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties which help ease Alzheimer's symptoms.

So…curry with curcumin in it, anyone?

How To Tell If Someone Is Having A Stroke

While it is hard to tell if someone is having a stroke, it is important to be able to identify if one is happening because prompt medical treatment can save a life. You can ask someone to do three simple tasks to determine if a person is having a stroke. The test is known as Smile-Arms-Sentences (SAS Test) and the tasks are: Ask the person to smile Ask the person to raise both their arms Ask the person to speak a simple sentence.

So…if the person has difficulty with any of these tasks, call 911.

Protecting Yourself From Identity Theft

Here are some practical things you can do to protect yourself from identity theft:

1. On your checks just put your initials for your first and last name. Someone stealing your checks won't know how you sign your checks.

2. On the signature line on the back of your credit cards write "Photo ID Required".

3. When you are paying a credit card bill, only write the last four digits of the credit card on your check's memo line.

4. Use your work phone number and address on your checks.

5. Make a photocopy of every document in your wallet. Be sure to copy the front and back. Keep this in a safe place. Write the credit card company's toll free number on the copy so that you can call to cancel if your cards are lost or stolen. (Don't panic, since your liability is limited to $50 per card).

6. File a police report immediately.

7. Call the three national credit reporting organizations immediately to place a fraud alert on your name and social security number. They are Equifax – 800 525-6285, Exprian (Formerly TRW) – 888 397-3742, Trans Union – 800 680-7289, Social Security Administration Fraud Line – 800 269-0271.
